Global Unity: This Week's Revolutionary Wins

This week, we're witnessing a beautiful coming together of community. The "I'll do it myself" mentality that toxic systems have ingrained in us is finally falling away, and what's emerging in its place is revolutionary.

We're seeing what happens when we stop trying to figure it out alone and start unifying together - trans beauty queens are being celebrated, scientists working to expand reproductive possibilities, political leaders are standing in solidarity for their community, and activists are organizing across continents for Gaza.

Let's dive into how reality has been reshaping across the globe this week.

Updates in Gaza

Feeding the People in Gaza: While military efforts were focused on the Global Sumud Flotilla, fishermen in Gaza seized a rare opening. Normally, Israel restricts access to the sea for 6 nautical miles, but while they were distracted, Gaza's residents were able to access deeper waters to fish for an abundant catch. It was the first chance in months to cast nets without the constant threat of being fired upon, detained, or forced back to shore. The flotilla wasn't for nothing; they fed the people of Gaza. And, Turkey is sending MORE boats to Gaza from all Black Sea provinces.

LGBTQ+ Global Wins

First Trans Woman from Asia to Compete at Miss Universe: Singer and reality TV star Nguyen Huong Giang will represent Vietnam at Miss Universe 2025, becoming the first transgender woman from Asia to compete for the crown. Winning Miss International Queen in 2018, she has been breaking barriers in Vietnamese entertainment since placing in the top four on Vietnam Idol in 2012 as the show's first trans contestant. Trans women are claiming their space on the world stage, showing that beauty, talent, and authenticity can't be contained by outdated gender norms.

Japan Recognizes Same Sex Couples: The Japanese government has decided to recognize same-sex couples under nine additional laws and ordinances, including disaster relief benefits, following a Supreme Court ruling that said same-sex partnerships deserve legal protection similar to marriage. This expansion brings the total to 33 laws in Japan that now acknowledge same-sex relationships.

Women Breaking Athletic Barriers

First Woman on Monroe's Baseball Team: 17-year-old Yedlimar de Jesus from Puerto Rico has made history as the first woman to play on Monroe University's men's baseball team, recruited after the head coach saw her talent at a college showcase. She's been playing baseball since age 5 and refuses to be pushed into softball, with her coach recognizing her skill and character among male teammates. This groundbreaking moment opens doors for women athletes who refuse to be limited by gendered expectations and which sports they can excel in.

Scientific Breakthroughs in Health

Human Embryos Created from Skin Cells: Scientists at Oregon Health and Science University have successfully created human embryos using DNA from skin cells combined with sperm, potentially revolutionizing fertility treatment for people who can't produce viable eggs or sperm. The technique could help older women, cancer survivors, and even allow same-sex couples to have genetically related children by using one partner's skin cells to create an egg. This research is reshaping the very definition of biological parenthood and offering hope to LGBTQ+ couples and others who've been excluded from traditional paths to genetic parenthood.

Treatment for Huntington's Disease:
Scientists have treated Huntington’s disease for the first time - the disease that causes nerve cells in the brain to decay over time, affecting a person's movements and mental health. By delivering a harmless viral vector into the brain, it instructs neurons to silence the toxic message from the mutant gene. The early trial data (not yet officially published) reports about a 75% slowdown from a single, potentially lifelong dose.

Political Powerhouses and Activists Making History

First Latina from Arizona in Congress: Adelita Grijalva won the special election to succeed her late father in Arizona's 7th District, becoming the first Latina elected to Congress from Arizona. The 54-year-old former Pima County supervisor and school board member ran on education priorities and immigrant rights in the heavily Latino border district. Her victory adds another powerful Latina voice to Congress at a time when representation matters more than ever for us.

No Federal Takeovers in Portland: Oregon Rep. Janelle Bynum went viral after delivering a crystal-clear message to ABC News about Trump's threats to send federal troops to Portland: "There will be no federal takeover of Portland, Oregon," followed by confident silence that left the interviewer thinking there were technical difficulties. When he realized she was still there, she simply said "I was just very clear" about her unwavering stance.

Activists Call Out Climate Criminal:
Activist comedian Walter Masterson crashed a billionaire fundraiser to call out David Rubenstein—owner of 77 fossil fuel companies and a dozen weapons manufacturers—for profiting off climate destruction and war. The video captures protestors one by one exposing Rubenstein’s and Governor Wes Moore’s hypocrisy on climate justice, calling Rubenstein a “climate criminal” and ending with Carlyle Group’s $24 billion fossil fuel empire. Sometimes public shaming is the best way to hold the oligarchy accountable.

Why This Week Matters

This week proved that when we stop trying to figure it out alone and start building together, we become an unstoppable force for change. With Gaza's fishermen seizing a rare moment to feed their community, scientists collaborating to create new possibilities for parenthood, and activists calling out climate criminals, we're witnessing the power of collective action in real time.

The "I'll do it myself" mentality that toxic systems taught us is dying, and what's emerging is revolutionary: the understanding that our individual power multiplies exponentially when we link arms with our community.
