If you're working every hour you have and your business still feels like a rock you're pushing uphill, it may be pulling you somewhere you haven't looked yet. This episode is about learning to read that pull, so you can build with your business instead of against it.
What you'll hear
Tamara starts from the idea that everything has consciousness, so the moment you create a business, give it a name and set your intentions for how it serves people, it starts to hold its own energy. It has no body, so it won't take action for you, but it does pull you in a direction, toward more contribution, more service and more money, and those three are usually connected.
She shares how she went from working every day of the week, across more than one business, to being pretty much retired, and what she learned along the way about partnering with a business rather than pushing it.
How to tell where your business's energy is pulling
Look at your results before your preferences. Years ago Tamara ran two businesses at the same time and tracked clients and revenue in both. Everyone loved the marketing for one of them, but the other kept bringing in more clients with less effort, and that was the pull. The same goes for products: the one you love most may not be the one people keep buying. Notice which offers sell easily and which people come to you most naturally, because that's where the energy already is.
Then ask your business what it wants, the way you would ask a person, through journaling, meditation or simply sitting still. When Tamara did, the answer was that it wanted her to be the face of it, which she had resisted for years; her first three-day event on stage is what set everything in motion.
Business cycles and seasons
Every business has its own rhythm, a buying season and a slow season, and women have their own cycles too. A solar installer in a place that snows won't be on rooftops in the snow, but they can get creative about how they sell in that season. Black Friday sales aren't for everybody, and neither is taking the last two months of the year off; what matters is the cycle your business is actually in.
When you're just starting, you're in discovery. You may put in ten units of energy to get one back, and the work is learning whether your message lands with the right buyer. Tamara compares it to an ice cream truck that has to circle the neighborhood again and again, until the kids are outside before they even hear the bell.
Choosing one focus when you have too many ideas
Start with what you enjoy providing, because that's where your energy and passion are. Tamara learned she loves facilitating people and doesn't enjoy training coaches, but only after building a certified coaching program and training 35 coaches. When you offer everything, people get overwhelmed, the way she felt walking into a grocery store after living in a mud hut in Africa and finding 85 kinds of yogurt. As she puts it, "nobody says yes to wet noodles." Find the one thing you're obsessed with, then find who hears you.
The 20% that brings in clients
Hustle culture ties your worth to how much you get done. Tamara looks at her business more scientifically: which action actually produced the result? About 75 to 80% of her clients come through referrals and people who know her, while $80,000 of Facebook ads over the life of the business never did. So she drops the busywork and keeps the 20% that works.
She describes a client who stepped back from anxious pushing for a month and brought in more within 30 days than in the four months before, and another who made more sales the more time she spent with her dog. Treat your business like a relationship you nurture, and nurture yourself in it too. Want to go further? Read why everything feels so hard when life looks fine.
