If you're dreading a family gathering you feel you can't say no to, the guilt and obligation you're carrying are much older than this holiday season. This episode is about why they run so deep, and three ways to choose differently without the guilt.
What you'll hear
The holidays bring up obligation, guilt, shame and appeasement, along with very little room for what you actually want. Tamara looks at where those feelings come from, what living out of alignment does to the rest of your life, and three ways to change it. It applies any time of year, whenever your family has opinions about how you should act and where you should be.
What alignment means, and what happens without it
Alignment means your thoughts, feelings and actions all match what you believe is true. When you believe one thing and go do another, like spending four days somewhere that doesn't respect you or the people you love, your energy field turns to static, like a TV that can't hold a channel, and things start going sideways. Tamara describes a client who went home for Thanksgiving against everything he believed, and while he was away, the car he'd been complaining about for months was broken into and stolen. How you do one thing is how you do everything, and the holidays bring every misalignment to the surface.
Why women feel responsible for everyone's happiness
Most of us were trained to want to make our parents happy, and to believe their happiness matters more than ours, so we tell ourselves it's only a few days. Inside a patriarchal framework, women also carry the mental load of the holidays, the checklists, the traditions and the magic for everyone else, along with the job of keeping everybody happy. Expectations add pressure on both sides, and going back to the same gathering every year hoping it will go differently is, as Tamara says, the definition of insanity.
Her own Thanksgiving shows what happens when you ask what you want instead. She didn't want to cook or do dishes and she did want to get dressed up, so she went out to dinner at a hotel, with the best hot cocoa, and spent the next day at the hot springs.
Honor what you want and set parameters
The universe responds to your actions like a magnet. If you go somewhere you don't want to be, all it registers is that you went, so it brings you more of the same; when your choice and your feelings match, the message is clear, and it can start bringing you what you do like.
Then set parameters and have clear, gracious conversations about what you will and won't do. A boundary often asks someone else to change, and when they don't, you're left feeling at the effect of them. A parameter is about what you'll do, like the bumper guards in a bowling lane, and it always leaves you a way out. Tamara keeps it simple: some things about this situation don't work for me, and if they happen, I'll leave; if they happen again, I'll make other plans. If someone yells at you on the phone, you can calmly hang up.
Letting go of the outcome
The third step is to stay unattached. You direct the energy, and people will have their reactions, which is okay; sometimes they surprise you, and it's worth leaving room for that. "Most people are just showing you who they are," so if you go in needing someone to change and get angry when they do what they've always done, you're back in the same loop. Take a new action instead, like booking a hotel for the night, and let it be a little vacation. Then ask yourself the question Tamara leaves listeners with: if you had it all your way, what would the holidays look like, and what would you be experiencing? Want to go further? Read where your patterns come from.
